About Breifne College
Breifne College has a long tradition of serving the post-primary needs of the mid- Cavan region; initially, in the early decades of the century, as a Technical School; later, as a Vocational School in Farnham Street; and since, 1974, providing comprehensive education in its modern complex on the Cootehill Road.

The aim of the School is to create the conditions in which students can achieve their full potential-intellectually, morally, physically, culturally, socially-and acquire the highest standard of personal and academic excellence. The distinctive blend of academic, cultural scientific and techalogical subjects, which the School provides in an attractive, well-ordered environment, offers young people ideal preparation for meeting the demands and challenges of this modern, fast-changing world. Breifne College is a co-educational, multi-denominational equal opportunities school where religious and moral education are integral parts of the curriculum.

High standards of behaviour and work are expected from all pupils. A system of Year Heads and Class Tutors exists to promote a good learning atmosphere and to cater for pastoral needs. An active and supportive Parents Association helps to keep parents informed in a changing educational scene. The highly professional experience of over 50 ensures a wide range of expertise and academic talent which meets the needs of the modern age.

The core secondary school curriculum of Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate is the educational nucleus of the school. Traditionally students achieve excellent academic results in these examinations. The fruits of this are reflected in the high number of students who attain Third Level Places and pursue a wide variety of stimulating and satisfying careers.

The Learning Support Department provides assistance for students who need extra help because of specific difficulties. This includes: Special Needs Education, Remedial Education, Classroom Assistants, and Personal Assistants where applicable.

Career Guidance and Counselling is an essential resource which is available to all students. Students are encouraged to develop as individuals and also as integral participating members of society. Personal Counselling is provided on a one to one basis allowing students to discuss school or personal problems in strict confidence.

The school has a very modern computer room with state of the art equipment including personal computers, printer, scanners and videos conferencing equipment. The video-conferencing and Internet facilities enable pupils to communicate with other schools in Ireland and Europe on a wide variety of subjects and topics.

The development of a healthy approach to leisure time is promoted through a wide range of sporting, cultural, and social activities. The School provides camoige, ladies football, basketball, badminton, trampolining, gaelic football, soccer, hurling, golf, table tennis, swimming and water sports, adventure sports, cross country, track and field, music, speech and drama, dance, video production, drama productions, educational tours, film studies, debating, theatre visits\workshops and media studies. Added to this the school has an up-to-date refurbished library stocked with exciting and appropriate modern publications.
